The government is taking immediate and decisive steps to enhance security in Nadi’s popular Martintar strip following an incident involving three Virgin Airways crew members. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, stated that the situation would be addressed urgently in Cabinet meetings to discuss additional security measures.

Gavoka reassured the public of the government’s commitment to transparency while addressing the issue, stating that such isolated events do not represent the overall safety of Fiji. He confirmed that Tourism Fiji will keep key international markets informed to protect the country’s reputation as a safe travel destination.

Most of the affected crew members have returned home with their families, while the last group left the next day. Gavoka acknowledged that while Fiji is generally safe, incidents can occur anywhere, urging tourists to exercise caution, especially in nightlife areas.

He emphasized that Fiji’s standing as a secure destination has contributed to the thriving tourism industry, which is close to welcoming one million visitors this year, with travel demand remaining strong. Reflecting on the incident, Gavoka noted the connections that airline crews often develop with destinations they frequent, highlighting the importance of maintaining safety to uphold the country’s cherished tourism reputation.

In light of this incident, it is a reminder that while challenges can arise, the government’s proactive stance on security can enhance public confidence and contribute positively to the tourism sector. The continued success of Fiji’s tourism underscores its resilience and commitment to safety and hospitality.
