The Fiji Corrections Service has reported a concerning increase in drug-related offenses among inmates, leading to the proposal for a specialized rehabilitation facility. Acting Commissioner Auta Moceisuva highlighted that drug offenses have now become the fourth most prevalent category of crime among prisoners, indicating a significant shift in the types of criminal activities being observed.
Currently, the only major facility providing rehabilitation services in Fiji is St Giles Hospital, which is operating beyond its capacity. In response to this growing issue, the proposed rehabilitation center will prioritize treatment over incarceration. The facility will be staffed with medical professionals, including doctors, counselors, and psychologists, while corrections officers will ensure safety and security.
The development of this project is being carried out in collaboration with the Public Works Department, and there are ongoing discussions with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to gain additional support. Commissioner Moceisuva mentioned that the timeline for the center’s completion will largely depend on the availability of funding, signaling an urgent need to address the rise in drug-related cases effectively.
This initiative reflects a positive step towards addressing the root causes of crime and providing support for rehabilitation, showing a commitment to not only manage but also transform the lives of inmates. The focus on treatment signals a shift in approach, prioritizing recovery and social reintegration.
