Fiji Plans Local Elections to Boost Women in Politics

Fiji’s Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister, Lenora Qereqeretabua, has announced plans for local government elections next year, emphasizing that this is a significant step towards increasing women’s participation in politics. During a panel discussion at a women’s forum in Apia, Samoa, Qereqeretabua highlighted the country’s low representation of women in Parliament, a situation they aim to improve in the upcoming elections.

“We haven’t had local government elections in Fiji since 2005,” she stated, expressing optimism for the elections planned for next year or the following year. She noted that such elections are recognized globally as a vital first step for fostering women’s political involvement.

Qereqeretabua also mentioned the recent mock women’s parliament in Fiji, which aimed to boost female participation in governance. “We had more than 100 applicants for 58 positions, including roles in the opposition, government, and as the speaker,” she said. While acknowledging that women’s representation in Parliament remains low, she encouraged women to empower each other and create opportunities for future generations, stating, “Make it possible for other girls and women to take a place.”

The Commonwealth Women’s Forum wrapped up yesterday.
