Fiji Plans Its First Data Center, Set to Start in 2026

Telecom Fiji Limited’s head of ICT, Shalvin Narayan, has announced plans for the construction of a data center set to commence in 2026. The project, which is expected to span approximately 24 months, marks a significant development for both Fiji and the broader Pacific region.

Speaking at the 2025 EXTRA Fiji Architecture Conference and Trade Exhibition held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf Resort and Spa in Nadi, Mr. Narayan explained that the ambitious data center will be the first of its kind for Fiji and will require extensive planning. “We have gone through a full design cycle since it’s a very large facility for Fiji and the region,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of assessing business requirements, ecological considerations, and available power as part of the design process.

While Mr. Narayan did not disclose the overall financial investment for the project, he noted that determination of the budget would be handled by Telecom Fiji’s finance team. This announcement aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance Fiji’s digital infrastructure, reflecting a commitment to improving telecommunications capabilities across the nation.

The construction of the data center is part of a larger movement toward modernization and connectivity in Fiji. Recently, Telecom Fiji also committed to a $10 million investment in a fiber cable project aimed at improving internet services across Vanua Levu. This initiative is anticipated to bolster economic growth, enhance educational opportunities, and foster resilience against natural disasters within remote communities.

With ongoing projects like these, Fiji is poised to strengthen its digital landscape, offering improved connectivity and presenting new opportunities for its residents. The developments underscore a hopeful trajectory toward a more interconnected and robust future for the people of Fiji.
