The Cabinet has approved the formation of an Inter-Agency Committee, spearheaded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to manage the preparations for the repatriation of the late Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu VC from Papua New Guinea to Fiji, scheduled for June 2025. Cpl. Sukanaivalu is recognized as Fiji’s sole recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest honor awarded for extraordinary courage in battle by the British Armed Forces.
Originally from Yacata Village in Cakaudrove, his final resting place is at the Bitapaka War Cemetery in East New Britain, where he lies alongside 32 fellow Fijian soldiers.
