Dr. Raijeli Taga, the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, recently concluded an official visit to New Zealand, where she engaged with officials at the Fiji High Commission in Wellington. On her arrival, she was warmly welcomed by Fiji’s High Commissioner to New Zealand, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, and the staff at the High Commission.

This visit served as a vital platform to discuss ways to enhance Fiji–New Zealand bilateral relations and to improve services for Fijians residing in Aotearoa. The High Commission provided insights into various development support programs, highlighting cooperation in defense and policing, the Labor Mobility Scheme, trade and investment initiatives, as well as ongoing activities aimed at engaging the Fijian diaspora.

During her trip, Dr. Taga took the opportunity to visit four mission properties in New Zealand, which allowed her to evaluate operational needs and pinpoint areas that urgently require support from the headquarters. Trade officers in Auckland also presented their priority areas and the work currently underway.

A significant aspect of the discussions included plans for a new Fiji Consulate Office in Auckland. This proposed office is intended to be a centralized hub for both trade assistance and consular services, enhancing the support network for Fijians in the region.

The Fiji High Commission reiterated its dedication to improving services and effectively advocating for the interests of the Fiji Government in New Zealand. This commitment is particularly crucial given the presence of over 100,000 Fijians living in Aotearoa, highlighting the importance of strengthening personal relations and providing essential consular support. This visit not only underscores the importance of diplomatic ties but also reflects a proactive approach to supporting the Fijian community abroad.
