Fiji is hosting the inaugural Oceania Rugby high-performance camp for match officials in Nadi, marking a significant advancement in the development of rugby officiating standards across the Oceania region. This initiative is supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) through its PacificAus Sports program and aims to improve the skills, knowledge, and performance of match officials.

As a result of this camp, Olympian referee Lavenia Racaca and newcomer Meresiana Savenaca have been chosen by Oceania Rugby to officiate in the Australian Championship at the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. This appointment will be a first for Meresiana on the international stage, highlighting the growing presence of Fijian women in elite rugby officiating.

The camp, led by experienced international referees and educators, offers a vital chance for referees from across the Pacific to enhance their officiating techniques and stay updated on the latest advancements in the field. Participants are engaged in training sessions, workshops, and discussions aimed at promoting excellence and unity among match officials.

Oceania Rugby President Richard Sapias has underscored the camp’s significance, describing it as a pivotal moment for the region’s rugby development. “By launching this initiative in Fiji, we are reaffirming our commitment to supporting match officials and promoting excellence in rugby,” stated Sapias.

Additionally, the camp strives to create clear pathways for aspiring referees, ensuring a robust foundation for the sport’s future in the Pacific.
