The search for a new head coach for the Fiji Pearls netball team has attracted just two applicants, both of whom are from overseas, according to an announcement by Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki. The job opening was posted on November 5 and closed on November 22, with interviews set to take place within the next two weeks. The expectation is to finalize the appointment before January.

Sorovaki confirmed that outgoing coach Unaisi Rokoura would be departing this week as she begins her leave, following the conclusion of her contract. Rokoura indicated that she had submitted her application for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) position, which has also seen its term expire this year, alongside the CEO’s contract that concluded in September 2021.

For the CEO role, Sorovaki mentioned that there are four local applicants lined up for interviews. The new coach and CEO are both expected to be named by the end of the month.

In related developments, Sorovaki addressed the earlier discussions of hosting a Pacific Series with Netball New Zealand. She noted that they decided to cancel the series for the time being to ensure adequate preparation and funding, stating, “We saw it fit to cancel and possibly move it to allow for us to be better prepared to cater for the expectations of hosting a series of that level.”

This situation presents a unique opportunity for the Fiji Pearls. Bringing in an overseas coach could introduce fresh perspectives and strategies that could elevate the team’s performance. Furthermore, the focus on local leadership for the CEO position indicates a commitment to developing local talent and expertise, which bodes well for the future of Fiji netball.

Overall, while the initial circumstances may appear challenging, there is potential for significant growth and progress in the Fiji Pearls’ organization with these upcoming appointments.
