Netball Fiji is currently facing a significant crisis as President RubyAnn Sorovaki intends to address concerns raised by some members of the Fiji Pearls. Recently, the national team voiced serious allegations regarding mismanagement, highlighting issues that arose during the PacificAus Sports Series where they experienced logistical failures.
In a detailed letter, signed by several players, the Fiji Pearls outlined frustrations pertaining to allowances, claiming they were promised $250 each but instead received only $150. Additionally, an airport allowance of just $20 was initially provided, raising concerns over the organization’s financial management and support for the athletes’ welfare. The players expressed their discontent over poor living conditions and inadequate nutritional provisions during their stay, exacerbating their challenges on the court and impacting morale.
President Sorovaki acknowledged the issues but emphasized that the organization operates within budgetary constraints and standard procedures. She assured stakeholders that Netball Fiji is committed to addressing the grievances, stating that a thorough review of the tournament’s arrangements and team management is underway. “We strive to work collaboratively with our players,” she said, hoping to reach a mutual understanding that addresses the players’ discontent.
The dissatisfaction among the players is compounded by a collective push for governance reforms. Recently, 15 out of 19 associations threatened to withdraw from competitions due to their grievances concerning leadership and organizational failures. They called for a Special General Meeting (SGM) to discuss these pressing issues and demand accountability from the current executive committee.
Sorovaki aims to engage in productive dialogue with stakeholders during this critical period, with hopes that this will lead to meaningful reforms in governance and operational practices. Stakeholders express optimism that these discussions can foster improved relationships, enhance governance structures, and ultimately support the growth of netball in Fiji.
This moment could serve as a pivotal point in the direction of Fijian netball, as the collective call for change presents an opportunity to revitalize the sport, ensuring that both players and associations can thrive in a supportive environment. By working together, there is potential for structural improvements that could positively impact the future of netball in Fiji.
