The search for a new head coach for the Fiji Pearls has attracted only two overseas applicants, as confirmed by Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki. The coaching position was advertised on November 5, with the application period closing on November 22. Interviews for the candidates are set to take place within the next two weeks, with hopes of naming a new coach by January.
Outgoing coach Unaisi Rokoura stated that this is her final week in the role, as she prepares to take her leave following the end of her contract. Similarly, the Chief Executive Officer’s term also concluded this year. In contrast to the coaching position, all four candidates for the CEO role are local applicants, and interviews for that position will proceed as well.
In addition, Sorovaki discussed the previously proposed Pacific Series in collaboration with Netball New Zealand. She mentioned that discussions around the series had included considerations of funding and team readiness. Given these factors, the decision was made to cancel the series for the time being to ensure the Fiji Pearls can better prepare for a future event of that magnitude.
As the Fiji Pearls embark on this transition, there is an opportunity for a fresh perspective and new strategies that could enhance their competitiveness on the international stage. The upcoming appointments could bring renewed energy and focus to the team, fostering growth and development for future events.
In summary, while the coaching search has narrowed down to two international candidates, combined with the upcoming CEO recruitment of local talent, there’s a potential for significant improvements within Netball Fiji. As plans for future series are re-evaluated, the organization is taking steps to ensure that they can meet and exceed expectations moving forward.
