The search for the new head coach of the Fiji Pearls has yielded only two applicants, both of whom are from outside Fiji. This information was shared by Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki, following the closure of the application process on November 22. Interviews are set to begin in the next two weeks with the aim of appointing a new coach by January.
Outgoing coach Unaisi Rokoura confirmed that she is concluding her tenure this week, as she takes her pending leave. Her contract was not renewed after her term, along with the CEO’s, ended this year. Sorovaki stated that both applicants for the coach role will be interviewed, while the search for the new CEO has attracted local candidates, with a total of four applicants anticipated for interviews.
Furthermore, discussions regarding a proposed Pacific Series with Netball New Zealand were halted as Sorovaki noted the need for better funding and team preparations to meet the expectations of hosting such an event.
This situation presents an opportunity for the Fiji Pearls to bring fresh perspectives and international coaching expertise to the team. Although the local coaching talent might be overlooked this time, the upcoming appointments may lead to a rejuvenation of the national squad, paving the way for future successes on the international stage.
As the organization navigates this transition, it can be hopeful that the new leadership will strategically enhance the team’s performance and strengthen its presence in the netball community.
