Fiji Pearls interim head coach Jioweli Vakamoce exudes confidence as the team gears up for the upcoming PacificAus Sports Netball series scheduled from February 17-22. With only a few weeks remaining before the tournament, he reflected on a focused five-week training period that has yielded notable advancements in both fitness and court skills.
Vakamoce explained that the training regimen has consisted of two phases. The first two weeks emphasized improving the players’ fitness levels, which has gone exceptionally well, and the subsequent weeks have shifted focus towards developing court skills and gameplay combinations. While he acknowledged there have been some initial challenges, the team is actively working to address these issues.
A significant aspect of this training cycle is the integration of five new debutantes. The newcomers have been apprised of the responsibilities and expectations that come with representing the national team, particularly in an international context. Experienced players such as co-captains Ro Kalesi Tawake and Anaseini Nauqe, along with vice-captain Elenoa Gukirewa, are stepping up to mentor these emerging talents.
Despite the condensed preparation time, Vakamoce is committed to ensuring his team makes the most of every learning opportunity. He stressed the importance of communication, encouraging players to be open and expressive on the court. His coaching methodology leans heavily on practical game scenarios and setups, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
To further evaluate their progress, Vakamoce has proposed training matches against the Fiji men’s netball team, which would provide valuable competitive experience. Looking forward to the tournament, his aim is for the Pearls to not only maintain their current 14th-place ranking but to aim even higher against formidable opponents such as Tonga and Scotland.
This optimistic approach reflects a strong belief in the capabilities of the Fiji Pearls, and with continued dedication and teamwork, they may indeed surprise many in the upcoming series.
