The search for a new head coach for the Fiji Pearls is underway, with only two applicants having applied for the position, which was advertised on November 5. Both candidates are from abroad, as confirmed by Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki. The application period closed on November 22, and interviews for these candidates will be conducted within the next two weeks, leading to a new appointment by January.

Outgoing coach Unaisi Rokoura has announced that this week will be her final one with the team, as she begins her leave. Rokoura noted that her contract was not renewed, and she has submitted her application to the CEO.

Both Rokoura and the CEO’s three-year terms concluded this year, following their appointments in December and September 2021, respectively. Sorovaki revealed that four local applicants are in the running for the CEO position and will also undergo interviews.

The new head coach and CEO are expected to be announced by the end of this month. Additionally, regarding the planned Pacific Series discussions with Netball New Zealand earlier this year, Sorovaki explained that funding opportunities and team preparations prompted the decision to cancel the series. This move aims to allow more time for better preparation to meet the expectations of hosting such a high-profile event.

In summary, while the Fiji Pearls are navigating a transition period with their coaching staff, the upcoming appointments, particularly the inclusion of local candidates for the CEO role, may foster a renewed commitment to developing local talent in the netball community. The association’s decision to prioritize thorough preparation for future events reflects a hopeful strategy for greater success in netball endeavors.
