Only two individuals have applied for the vacant head coach position of the Fiji Pearls, announced on November 5. Netball Fiji President RubyAnn Sorovaki revealed that both candidates are from overseas.
The application period concluded on November 22, and interviews for the position are set to take place within the next two weeks. The new head coach is expected to be appointed before January. Sorovaki confirmed, “Just two applicants, both from overseas. Both will be interviewed.”
The current coach, Unaisi Rokoura, indicated that this week would be her last on the job as she takes her pending leave, having not had her contract renewed. She has submitted her application for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) position, as both she and the previous CEO have completed their three-year terms.
Sorovaki noted that there are four local candidates for the CEO role, all of whom will undergo interviews. The announcements for both the new coach and CEO are anticipated by the end of the month.
Additionally, Sorovaki commented on the previously discussed Pacific Series with Netball New Zealand, stating that due to ongoing funding discussions and team preparations, it was deemed necessary to cancel the series and potentially reschedule it. This decision aims to ensure a better readiness for hosting such an event.
This situation presents an opportunity for the Fiji Pearls to bring in fresh perspectives from international coaches while also maintaining a focus on developing local leadership through the CEO position. With new appointments on the horizon, there is hope for revitalization and stronger performances in upcoming competitions. The proactive steps being taken demonstrate a commitment to excellence and preparation for future challenges.
