The Fiji Pearls head coach position, which was advertised on November 5, has attracted only two applicants, both of whom are from overseas. This information was confirmed by RubyAnn Sorovaki, the president of Netball Fiji, who noted that the application period closed on November 22. Interviews for the role are set to take place in the next two weeks, with a new head coach expected to be appointed before January.
The outgoing coach, Unaisi Rokoura, revealed that this week will be her last as she prepares for her pending leave. She indicated that her contract had not been renewed and that she had submitted her application to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Both the coach and CEO’s three-year terms concluded this year after their appointments in December 2021 and September 2021, respectively.
In addition, Sorovaki mentioned that all four applicants for the CEO position are local, and they will also undergo interviews. The new coach and CEO are anticipated to be announced by the end of this month.
Regarding the earlier discussions about a proposed Pacific Series with Netball New Zealand, Sorovaki explained that the cancellation was deemed necessary as they were still exploring funding opportunities and preparing the team to meet the expectations of hosting a series at that level.
This moment presents an opportunity for fresh leadership within Netball Fiji, with the possibility of bringing in international experience through the new coach while also supporting local talent in the CEO role. The organization’s proactive approach to team and management preparation suggests a commitment to enhancing the performance and competitiveness of the Fiji Pearls in upcoming events.
In summary, the Fiji Pearls coaching vacancy has seen limited international interest, while the search for local leadership in the CEO position continues, indicating a dual approach to development within the sport in Fiji.
