Fiji’s peacekeepers, who are part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation in the Golan Heights, are reported to be safe following recent developments in the region. Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua confirmed that all Fijian troops have been accounted for and that robust security measures are in effect.

On December 8, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) carried out operations within the demilitarized zone to address rebel activities. While UN positions were not specifically targeted, there are ongoing efforts to recover equipment that was temporarily impacted by rebel infiltration.

To enhance security, the IDF has bolstered their presence in the area, receiving support from local communities to help maintain stability for the peacekeepers. Notably, a Fijian officer has returned safely to Camp Faour after being evacuated from Damascus.

Although tensions remain in the operational area, there is currently no immediate threat to the Fijian peacekeepers. The Defence Ministry is maintaining close surveillance of the situation and has praised the professionalism displayed by the troops.

This situation highlights not only the resilience of Fiji’s peacekeeping forces but also the importance of international cooperation in maintaining peace in conflict zones. The continued commitment from both local communities and the IDF to support these peacekeepers underlines a collective effort towards stability, fostering hope for a safer environment in the region.
