Fiji’s peacekeepers stationed in the Golan Heights under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization are currently safe amidst recent tensions in the region. Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua has provided reassurances to the public that all Fijian personnel are accounted for and that appropriate security protocols are in effect.

On December 8, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) conducted operations in the demilitarized zone aimed at addressing rebel activity. While UN positions have not been directly targeted during these operations, recovery efforts are in progress to retrieve equipment that has been temporarily disrupted due to rebel incursions.

The IDF has ramped up security measures in the area, and local communities are actively supporting peacekeepers, which helps to foster stability in the region. Furthermore, a Fijian officer has safely returned to Camp Faour following evacuation from Damascus, highlighting the responsive measures in place to ensure the safety of the troops.

Although the situation remains tense, there is currently no immediate threat to Fijian peacekeepers. The Defence Ministry remains vigilant in monitoring developments and commends the professionalism exhibited by the troops stationed overseas.

This situation illustrates the resilience and dedication of peacekeepers who stand firm in their commitment to maintaining peace and security despite challenging circumstances. As developments unfold, the collaborative efforts between local communities, the IDF, and international peacekeeping forces offer hope for a stabilized future in the region.
