In a significant event, twenty-three police officers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were honored with the distinguished UN Medal, recognizing their exceptional contributions to peacekeeping efforts in the region. The ceremony was officiated by UNMISS Deputy Police Commissioner Kaustubh Sharma and attended by senior leaders from the United Nations Police, contingent commanders, and representatives from Fiji and the Pacific community in South Sudan.

Fiji Police UNMISS Contingent Commander, SSP Aseri Nakibo, expressed immense pride in the Fiji Police officers’ service, who have been part of this mission since 2011. She highlighted the career of former Police Commissioner Unaisi Vuniwaqa as a testament to the proud achievements within UNMISS, noting that her legacy sets high standards for the Fiji Police Contingent.

In her speech, SSP Nakibo emphasized the longstanding tradition of Fijian involvement in international peacekeeping, acknowledging not only the officers’ dedication but also the sacrifices made by their families. The Deputy Police Commissioner praised their relentless efforts to uphold peace and security in challenging environments.

Fiji’s commitment to international peacekeeping is further demonstrated by their recent readiness for deployment, with twenty-two officers having completed Pre-Deployment Training as part of their preparation for service in South Sudan. This deployment aligns with Fiji’s dedication to promoting global peace and security and supports the Elsie Initiative, which aims to increase the participation of women in peace operations.

The recipients of the UN Medal embody the excellence and dedication associated with Fiji’s role in international peacekeeping. As the awarded officers continue their mission in South Sudan, the recognition serves as a reminder of Fiji’s pivotal international role in maintaining peace and stability. Additionally, it exemplifies Fiji’s steadfast commitment to contributing positively to international collaborations in securing a harmonious global future.
