Returning from his final tour of duty with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) marked a significant moment for Sergeant Aminiasi Koroinamusudroka Radrodro. At 54 years old, he has concluded a remarkable peacekeeping career, having recently returned home from his last deployment with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

This transition comes after the completion of eight tours of duty, which saw him serve in locations such as Lebanon, Sinai, and Iraq. This week, he reflected on his journey with emotion, recognizing that his homecoming signifies the end of his military service.

Hailing from Lomanikoro Village in Rewa, Sergeant Aminiasi began his military career in 1987. Starting as a private, he served as a personal waiter to then-military commander Sitiveni Rabuka. Throughout his career, he remained committed to serving his country, particularly in missions to the Middle East. He expressed deep gratitude for the military’s role in shaping him into a skilled and resilient soldier, emphasizing its contribution to maintaining stability and peace globally.

Despite the challenges faced during his deployments, including leaving his family behind, Sergeant Aminiasi acknowledged the necessity of answering the military’s call. He embraced the values of patience, professionalism, and discipline that he developed throughout his service. “The military is my life. It has done so much for me as a person,” he stated, reflecting on the experiences and support it provided over the years.

Completing a year and four months in Iraq, he returned home safely, grateful for the protection he received during his service in a war-torn environment. He recounted the challenges of engaging with various groups and the importance of maintaining vigilance for the safety of himself and his fellow soldiers. His reflections highlighted the strong ties of camaraderie among military personnel, emphasizing the dedication of Fiji’s troops.

In 1997, Sergeant Aminiasi briefly ventured into the catering industry, being the first soldier to enter hotel catering after leaving the military. His experience in renowned resorts further enriched his journey, allowing him to return to active duty and serve the current RFMF Commander.

As he approaches retirement, Sergeant Aminiasi looks back with satisfaction on his military accomplishments, grateful for the trust placed in him as a leader responsible for discipline, welfare, and training. Following a warm welcome ceremony for returning UNAMI soldiers, he eagerly embraced quality time with his family in Kinoya.

Sergeant Aminiasi’s journey is a testament to dedication and service, reflecting the spirit of the RFMF and the resilience of those who serve their nation. His experiences serve as an inspiration to others, showcasing the profound impact of a life devoted to peacekeeping and military service.
