Fiji Paves the Way for Rugby Officiating Excellence

Fiji is celebrating a significant achievement in rugby by hosting the first Oceania Rugby high-performance camp for match officials in Nadi. This event is a major advancement in enhancing the standards of rugby officiating throughout the Oceania region. It is supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs through the PacificAus Sports program, with the camp focused on improving the skills, knowledge, and performance of match officials.

As a result of the camp, Lavenia Racaca, an Olympian referee, along with newcomer Meresiana Savenaca, has been chosen by Oceania Rugby to officiate at the Australian Championship in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. This appointment marks Meresiana’s first-ever international role, presenting a thrilling opportunity for the emerging referee. The presence of two female referees from Fiji officiating at an elite level underscores the increasing influence of Fijian women in rugby officiating.

The camp features seasoned international referees and educators, providing a vital chance for referees from across the Pacific to refine their officiating skills and stay updated on the latest developments in the sport. Participants take part in various training sessions, workshops, and discussions aimed at promoting excellence and collaboration among officials.

Richard Sapias, President of Oceania Rugby, highlighted the significance of the camp, describing it as a pivotal moment for rugby development in the region. He stated, “By launching this initiative in Fiji, we are reaffirming our commitment to supporting match officials and promoting excellence in rugby.” The camp also seeks to create clear pathways for aspiring referees, establishing a solid foundation for the future of the sport in the Pacific.
