Fiji is hosting the first Oceania Rugby high-performance camp for match officials in Nadi, marking a significant advancement in the development of officiating standards in the region. The camp, supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs through the PacificAus Sports program, aims to enhance the skills and performance of match officials.
As a result of this camp, Olympian referee Lavenia Racaca and newcomer Meresiana Savenaca have been chosen by Oceania Rugby to officiate the Australian Championship in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. This opportunity represents Meresiana’s first international assignment, highlighting the rising presence of female referees from Fiji in elite rugby officiating.
Guided by seasoned international referees and educators, the camp offers crucial training sessions, workshops, and discussions to help referees from across the Pacific refine their techniques and stay updated with the latest advancements in officiating. The initiative is designed to cultivate excellence and unity among match officials.
Oceania Rugby President Richard Sapias emphasized the significance of this camp, referring to it as a pivotal moment for rugby development in the region. He stated, “By launching this initiative in Fiji, we are reaffirming our commitment to supporting match officials and promoting excellence in rugby.”
Furthermore, the camp aims to establish clear pathways for aspiring referees, ensuring a strong foundation for the future of the sport in the Pacific.
