Fiji Passport Backlog Triggers New Branch and Online Booking Push

The Ministry of Immigration in Fiji has reported a significant surge in passport applications, with over 40,000 passports issued so far this year. Permanent Secretary Aliki Salusalu noted that this figure does not account for pending applications or new requests, suggesting that the demand for passports is expected to surpass previous years, leading to a backlog.

In recent years, the annual applications have consistently exceeded the 40,000 mark, with many Fijians applying for various reasons, including work, migration, educational opportunities, medical reasons, or leisure travel. Salusalu reassured the public, stating that the ministry has sufficient passport stock to meet demands and has recently paused walk-in services to manage the increasing backlog effectively. During a brief closure of seven weeks for walk-in services, the department managed to issue 10,000 passports.

Salusalu explained that limited online appointment slots might pose challenges for citizens wanting to apply, as only 30 appointments can be available daily. He indicated that the ministry is expecting another shipment of 30,000 passports in January next year, which should help alleviate the delays caused by stock shortages.

The government has taken proactive steps to enhance service delivery amid rising demand. Immigration Minister Viliame Naupoto recently mentioned plans for a new branch office in Nakasi to better serve residents and alleviate congestion at the main Suva office. With a new online booking system being introduced and longer office hours considered for the future, these measures are aimed at improving accessibility and efficiency for all Fijians seeking passports.

Though frustrations have been voiced about delays, the Ministry of Immigration’s commitment to increasing its passport stock and enhancing processing capabilities reflects a robust effort to address these challenges and ensure better service for travelers. As the situation improves, there is hope for a more streamlined and efficient passport application experience for Fijians, further supporting the nation’s aspirations for global travel.
