Fiji Passenger Vessel Grounds: Investigation Underway

The Maritime Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is conducting an investigation into the grounding of the passenger vessel Lomaiviti Princess II, which occurred yesterday in the Maloi Passage along Ovalau’s west coast. The vessel was en route from Natovi Jetty to Levuka, carrying over 40 passengers, crew members, and five vehicles when the incident took place.

MSAF’s chief executive officer, Joweli Cawaki, stated he was notified of the situation shortly after the vessel became grounded at around 9:20 AM. He mentioned that another vessel, the Saint Mary, was nearby and provided assistance by towing the grounded vessel and helping transport the passengers to Levuka.

Captain Aca James Small, manager of Goundar Shipping Services, indicated that the vessel was operating on its regular route when it struck a reef. He expressed concern over potential crew negligence, as they were likely overly confident in their knowledge of the route. Fortunately, he confirmed that there were no injuries to the passengers.

Captain Small also mentioned that salvaging the vessel would require waiting for high tide. As a result of the incident, Goundar Shipping Limited has suspended all its scheduled trips to Levuka until further notice.
