The People’s Alliance Party has voiced its support for Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau’s call for additional consultations regarding a proposed increase in electricity tariffs. Party general secretary Sila Balawa acknowledged the independent role of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) but emphasized the importance of elected representatives in addressing public concerns.
Balawa underscored that when Tuisawau expresses apprehensions about rising electricity costs, he does so on behalf of everyday Fijians who will be affected by the hike. He stated, “Calling for further consultation does not in any way undermine or erode the independence of the FCCC. Rather, it reflects a responsible and people-centred approach to decision-making, especially on matters that directly affect household expenses, small businesses, and the cost of living.”
Balawa further articulated that legal independence should not create a barrier to public concerns. He stressed that regulatory decisions impacting the nation should be based on both quantitative analysis and the lived experiences of the populace. The People’s Alliance Party contends that meaningful consultation enhances public trust, improves decision-making, and prioritizes consumer interests within the regulatory framework.
The remarks from the party highlight the legitimacy of Tuisawau’s concerns, framing them as necessary for the welfare of the Fijian community. By advocating for greater engagement in discussions surrounding crucial financial matters, the People’s Alliance Party aims to ensure that the interests of consumers remain a priority in regulatory decisions, promoting a more inclusive and adaptive decision-making process in Fiji.
