The Parliament of Fiji will be prorogued starting Monday, December 16, 2024, until the next State Opening on Monday, February 24, 2025. Prorogation marks the official conclusion of a parliamentary session within the four-year Parliamentary Term and, by convention, is not counted as a sitting day.

The Speaker of Parliament has formally notified the President of Fiji regarding this prorogation and the upcoming State Opening. During this period, all parliamentary activities, including sittings and proceedings related to bills and reports, will be temporarily suspended, except for urgent matters deemed necessary by the Speaker.

The State Opening of the third session will be led by President Ratu Naiqama Tawakecolati Lalabalavu on February 24, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. The event will feature a full military Guard-of-Honor by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and will also witness the attendance of the Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo, Justices of Appeal, and other judges.

Parliament is set to reconvene on Monday, March 3, 2025, for a two-week session, while other operations by the Parliament secretariat will continue as usual during the prorogation.

This transition period offers an opportunity for reflection and preparation in Parliament, paving the way for renewed discussions and legislative action when sessions resume. As Fiji approaches this pivotal moment, citizens can anticipate continued governance and strategic advancements following the State Opening, fostering hope for a productive year ahead in the nation’s legislative framework.
