Parliament in Fiji will be prorogued starting Monday, December 16, 2024, until the resumption of the next session on Monday, February 24, 2025. This prorogation marks the formal conclusion of a Parliamentary session within the country’s four-year parliamentary term.
The Speaker of Parliament has officially communicated this decision to the President of Fiji. Throughout the prorogation period, regular parliamentary activities, including sittings and committee proceedings regarding bills, motions, and reports, will be suspended. However, the Speaker retains the authority to address any urgent matters that may arise during this time.
The State Opening of the new session will be presided over by His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Tawakecolati Lalabalavu, President of the Republic of Fiji, on February 24, 2025, beginning at 10:00 a.m. This event will include a full military Guard-of-Honor from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. In attendance will be key judicial figures including the Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo and Justices of Appeal.
Following the State Opening, Parliament will reconvene on March 3, 2025, for a two-week sitting period. Meanwhile, the operations of the Parliament secretariat will continue as usual unless informed otherwise.
This transition period provides parliamentarians a chance to prepare for the upcoming legislative priorities and engage with their constituents. It demonstrates an ongoing commitment to governmental processes and the rule of law in Fiji.
In summary, the prorogation paves the way for a new legislative session that promises to address important national issues, fostering a hopeful outlook for the future of governance in Fiji.
