Parliament will be prorogued from December 16, 2024, until its next session opens on February 24, 2025. Prorogation marks the official conclusion of a Parliamentary session within the four-year Parliamentary term.

The Honourable Speaker has officially notified His Excellency the President about the prorogation and the upcoming State Opening of Parliament. During the prorogation period, all Parliamentary activities, including sittings and proceedings of the Parliamentary Standing Committees concerning Bills, Motions, and reports, will be suspended, except for urgent matters that may be addressed at the Speaker’s discretion.

The third session of Parliament will commence with the State Opening, which will be led by His Excellency the President of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Tawakecolati Lalabalavu, on February 24, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. The event will feature a ceremonial military Guard-of-Honour from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and be attended by relevant judiciary officials, including the Acting Honourable Chief Justice Salesi Temo and Justices of Appeal.

Parliament is scheduled to reconvene on March 3, 2025, for a two-week session. Despite the prorogation, operations within the Parliament secretariat will continue unless otherwise directed.

This prorogation marks a significant opportunity for reflection and strategizing for the upcoming session, allowing Parliament to prepare for important matters that will impact the nation. It’s a time for Parliament members to regroup and engage with their constituents, ensuring that they are well-informed and ready for the discussions ahead.
