Parliament will be prorogued starting Monday, December 16, 2024, until the next State Opening on Monday, February 24, 2025. Prorogation indicates the formal conclusion of a parliamentary session within the standard four-year parliamentary term.

The Honourable Speaker promptly informed His Excellency the President about this prorogation and the scheduled State Opening. Throughout the prorogation phase, all parliamentary proceedings, including sittings and committee activities concerning bills, motions, and reports, will be paused, except for urgent matters that the Speaker may deem necessary.

The State Opening for the third session of Parliament will be conducted by His Excellency the President of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Tawakecolati Lalabalavu, on February 24, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., accompanied by a full military guard of honor by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. The event will also see attendance from the Acting Honourable Chief Justice, Salesi Temo, Justices of Appeal, and other judges.

Parliament is set to reconvene on March 3, 2025, for two weeks of sittings. Meanwhile, operations of the Parliament secretariat will persist during the prorogation unless otherwise announced.

This pause in parliamentary activities allows members to reflect on their work and responsibilities, paving the way for a productive new session ahead. The upcoming State Opening emphasizes the importance of governance and aims to foster a collaborative atmosphere among the branches of government.

In summary, this prorogation marks a significant transition for the Parliament, leading to an anticipated new session that will hopefully continue to prioritize the needs and concerns of the citizens of Fiji.
