Parliament is set to be prorogued from December 16, 2024, until its reopening on February 24, 2025. Prorogation marks the official conclusion of a parliamentary session within the four-year parliamentary term.

The Speaker of Parliament has officially notified His Excellency the President about this prorogation and the upcoming State Opening of Parliament. During this prorogation period, all parliamentary activities, including sittings and proceedings by the Parliamentary Standing Committees regarding Bills, Motions, and Reports, will be paused. However, the Speaker retains the authority to address any urgent matters that may arise during this time.

The State Opening of the third session of Parliament will be conducted by His Excellency the President of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Tawakecolati Lalabalavu, at 10:00 a.m. on February 24, 2025, which will include a formal military Guard-of-Honour by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. The event will also be graced by attendance from the Acting Chief Justice, Salesi Temo, as well as Justices of Appeal and other Puisne Judges.

Following the State Opening, Parliament is scheduled to reconvene on March 3, 2025, for a two-week session. Meanwhile, operations of the Parliament secretariat will proceed as usual during the prorogation unless indicated otherwise.

In summary, this prorogation provides a much-needed pause for lawmakers, allowing them to regroup and prepare for the next session. This can potentially lead to fresh ideas and vigorous discussions once parliamentary activities resume, benefiting the legislative process.

Hopeful thinking emphasizes that this period may also give parliamentarians an opportunity to engage with their constituents and gather insights, ensuring that they return informed and ready to address the pressing issues facing the nation.
