A delegation from the Parliament of Fiji has embarked on an official study visit to the United Kingdom, spearheaded by the Speaker of Parliament. This visit represents an important opportunity for diplomatic engagement, with key activities scheduled at the UK Parliament.

The visiting team includes notable members such as Minister for Foreign Affairs Sakiasi Ditoka, as well as opposition MPs Faiyaz Koya and Premila Kumar, Assistant Minister Naisa Tuinaceva, and staff from the Parliament secretariat. Upon arrival, the Fijian delegation received a warm welcome from Sarah Dickson, Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK. The programme started with an informative guided tour of the iconic Palace of Westminster.

Throughout their time in the UK, the delegation engaged in meetings with prominent figures including Nusrat Ghani, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons; Baroness Armstrong; and Rhiannon Hollis, the Deputy Principal Clerk of the Joint Committee on Human Rights. These discussions have revolved around essential aspects of parliamentary governance, focusing on the separation of powers, the mechanics of legislative scrutiny, and the UK’s committee system along with its parliamentary procedures.

The primary aim of this study visit is to fortify parliamentary capacity, facilitate the sharing of best practices, and foster enhanced institutional cooperation between Fiji and the United Kingdom. This collaboration could lead to significant developments in governance for both nations, reinforcing the vital role of effective parliamentary systems in promoting democratic ideals.
