In a decisive move to bolster the operational efficiency of the Counter Narcotics Bureau, all active police officers within the bureau are set to return to their original units immediately. Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua announced the change as a step towards refining the bureau’s operational integrity and anticipated that the revised bureau will be fully operational by the close of the current fiscal year.

The minister emphasized the importance of integrity, ethical conduct, and resilience for those wishing to join or rejoin the bureau, amidst allegations of unlawful possession of drugs involving police officers. Recently, two officers in Suva were apprehended over alleged illicit drug possession, underscoring the urgent need for a structured overhaul within the bureau. Naivalurua stressed that the arrests demonstrate a zero-tolerance approach towards misconduct within the police force, affirming that no officer is above the law.

The bureau has faced scrutiny following several high-profile incidents highlighting internal irregularities and alleged participation in drug-related activities. These events have raised vital questions regarding the bureau’s credibility and operational transparency. A review of its structure is underway, and the involved personnel must go through a rigorous vetting process to restore public trust and demonstrate accountability.

Naivalurua reassured the community that the vast majority of officers remain steadfast in their commitment to justice and transparent service. With the support of the Commissioner of Police, the bureau’s reform aims to strengthen public confidence and eradicate those who undermine the integrity of the force. As investigations continue, the minister calls on the public to unite in the joint effort to combat the prevalence of drugs, aiming for a secure and thriving environment for all citizens in Fiji.

The ongoing reforms reflect an earnest commitment to address drug-related issues comprehensively, optimizing the bureau’s structure and enhancing public trust. Through diligent effort and collaboration between law enforcement and the community, Fiji seeks to foster an environment defined by trust and security, fighting against the tide of narcotics affecting the nation and the region.
