Fiji Outcry Over Police Officer Pastor’s Controversial Sermon

Opposition Member of Parliament Vijay Nath has vehemently criticized remarks made by a pastor who is also a police officer during a sermon that has gained significant attention on social media. Nath labeled the comments directed at Hindus and Muslims as “unethical and disgraceful,” highlighting the inappropriate nature of such statements coming from a public servant sworn to uphold peace and respect within society.

“This behavior is made even more egregious by the fact that the individual is a Police Officer, a public servant whose solemn oath is to uphold the very peace, discipline, and respect he has now endangered,” asserted Mr. Nath. He emphasized that Fiji’s identity is rooted in its multicultural and multi-religious heritage, where people from diverse backgrounds have coexisted in harmony for generations.

Nath further condemned any attempts to demean or disrespect another’s religion or culture, framing such actions as a betrayal against the spirit of tolerance that forms the bedrock of Fijian society. He expressed concerns over the silence of those present during the sermon, stating, “Silence in the face of prejudice is not neutrality; it is complicity.” He urged the community to actively reject divisions and instead embrace moral clarity, calling on citizens to unite in preserving the values of respect and understanding that are essential to Fiji’s social fabric.

This incident echoes broader sentiments observed in recent events surrounding religious intolerance in Fiji. The Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji previously called for an investigation into a police officer for making disparaging comments that stirred outrage among the Hindu and Muslim communities. They emphasized that such sentiments undermine the core values of racial harmony in the nation and erode public trust in law enforcement institutions.

Opposition leaders and community representatives have reiterated the necessity for dialogue and mutual respect among Fiji’s diverse faith communities, especially in light of recent incidents of vandalism aimed at places of worship. These unsettling events serve not only as reminders of the ongoing challenges to Fiji’s unity but also as opportunities for reinforcing the importance of collectively nurturing the nation’s rich cultural tapestry. By actively engaging in respectful conversations and actions, there is hope that Fiji can move towards a future marked by peace and solidarity among all its citizens.
