Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu has criticized the Government’s recent suspension of proposed tariff increases by Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL), branding it as mere political theater rather than a substantive relief effort for the public. His remarks follow the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission’s decision to pause the tariff hike and conduct a 21-day consultation period.
While acknowledging the suspension, Seruiratu strongly contested the notion that it is a display of compassion. He suggested that the move is a strategic attempt to mitigate public discontent following a backlash against the proposed increases. “This 21-day ‘stay’ is a calculated piece of political theatre rather than a genuine act of compassion,” he commented.
Seruiratu asserted that such significant decisions cannot occur without Cabinet involvement, emphasizing that the proposed tariff hike had passed through established governmental processes rather than arising from a “rogue” initiative. He argued that the Government’s effort to distance itself from its prior decisions came only after recognizing the depth of public anger and facing pressure from the Opposition.
He pointed out that this situation revealed a failure in governance, indicating a lack of foresight among leaders who now seem to be resorting to reactive measures instead of proactive governance. “This suspension is a transparent attempt to bolster approval ratings rather than protect the interests of Fijian taxpayers,” he stated.
Additionally, Seruiratu expressed concerns about the legitimacy and effectiveness of the FCCC, questioning its recent decisions, including the endorsement of the tariff increase and the subsequent suspension for broader public consultation. The Opposition is calling for a commitment to transparency, advocating for genuine public consultation, fiscal clarity regarding EFL’s funding needs, and a comprehensive explanation about the situation surrounding the appointment and removal of FCCC chair Joel Abraham.
This ongoing debate highlights the importance of transparent governance and public engagement in policymaking, as the Opposition urges the Government to prioritize the needs of its citizens over political optics.
