The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has criticized the Fijian Government for its recent expenditure of $64,813.67 on ministerial trips to celebrate Fiji’s Independence Day with the diaspora. Seruiratu described this expense as indicative of a government that has “lost all sense of financial responsibility.”
The financial revelation has prompted significant backlash as it highlights the government’s spending priorities amidst ongoing domestic challenges. Seruiratu pointed out that while ordinary Fijians are facing increased costs of living and essential services like hospitals are out of basic supplies, government officials continue to indulge in extravagant overseas trips that seem to serve minimal purpose for the nation or its economy.
He particularly highlighted a costly trip to Wellington by the Minister for Justice, which alone charged taxpayers $11,783.84. “These trips exemplify the misplaced priorities of a Government that seems more interested in photo opportunities abroad rather than tackling the pressing challenges in our nation,” Seruiratu remarked.
The opposition leader framed this issue as one of core fiscal responsibility, asserting that the government is failing to respect public funds. “Fiji deserves a Government that exercises fiscal prudence and treats public money with respect. Instead, we have a Cabinet with no limits when it comes to traveling the globe at taxpayers’ expense, while citizens grapple with escalating costs, crumbling infrastructure, and an overstrained health system,” he warned.
Seruiratu urged the Prime Minister to reevaluate and put an end to unnecessary overseas travel, advocating for the redirection of those funds towards essential services beneficial to the Fijian populace.
This criticism comes at a time when scrutiny of government spending is more crucial than ever, particularly as reports previously revealed that key government members, including Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, have also undertaken numerous costly trips over the past year, totaling significant expenses. Notably, the cumulative spending of officials has drawn attention to the pressing need for accountability in public expenditure.
While the opposition raises valid concerns about government spending, it is important to acknowledge that these international engagements may foster diplomatic relationships and potential beneficial investments. The hope remains that future governmental activities will focus on initiatives that yield positive outcomes for Fijian citizens, aligning publicly funded endeavors with the pressing needs of the people and supporting prosperity throughout the nation.
