Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, has voiced significant concerns regarding the Prime Minister’s recent testimony before the Commission, arguing that it has raised more questions than it has resolved. Seruiratu emphasized that instead of providing clarity and accountability, the Prime Minister’s statements appeared to divert attention towards personal narratives while avoiding the more profound truths crucial for the nation.

He acknowledged the complexities faced by the Commissioners, who must balance sensitivity with the need for thorough inquiry. However, he insisted that a lack of rigorous questioning directed at key figures in the testimony results in missed opportunities for accountability. This sentiment reflects a growing frustration among the public who seek transparency in Fiji’s political landscape.

Seruiratu pointed out that understanding Fiji’s political history is essential for the Commission’s work. He stressed that a deeper engagement with the events surrounding the coups of 1987, 2000, and 2006 is vital. These events significantly shaped the nation’s political trajectory, and examining the roles of leaders and other prominent witnesses is necessary for a comprehensive understanding.

Highlighting the importance of transparency, Seruiratu stated, “This process is funded by the people of Fiji. They deserve transparency and honesty. They deserve to know who the real architects of the coups were—the planners, enablers, and influencers behind the scenes.” He cautioned that without uncovering these truths, the path to reconciliation may remain obstructed, leaving unresolved wounds within the community.

The Opposition continues to advocate for a more thorough investigation into Fiji’s coup history, urging for accountability and fostering genuine national reconciliation, as they believe this is essential for the country’s healing and progress. This call for transparency is a hopeful step towards addressing past grievances and moving forward united as a nation.
