Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has voiced his concerns regarding comments made by Ahmed Bhamji, the Chairman of the Sugar Cane Growers Fund, who suggested that Opposition Members of Parliament should not seek answers about the government’s plans to rejuvenate the sugar industry.
In a formal statement, Seruiratu emphasized that such remarks reflect a misunderstanding of the Opposition’s essential role within a parliamentary democracy. He asserted, “In a parliamentary democracy, the role of the Opposition is clear and well-established. It is our constitutional responsibility to hold the Government and public institutions to account on behalf of the people of Fiji.”
Highlighting the significance of the sugar industry, Seruiratu noted that it is not just an economic sector but a vital part of national interest, supported by public policy and the labor of thousands of Fijians. He stressed that the Opposition holds both the right and duty to demand transparency and to scrutinize governmental initiatives to ensure they are credible and serve the best interest of the public.
Moreover, he clarified that supporting the sugar industry includes the responsibility to highlight strengths as well as shortcomings. “Support includes acknowledging positive initiatives where they exist, but it also includes constructive criticism where policies are unclear, progress is inadequate, or accountability is lacking,” Seruiratu explained.
He also underscored that Bhamji’s role as a chair of a statutory body involves a level of public trust that necessitates accountability not just to the current government, but also to Parliament and the citizens of Fiji. Seruiratu argued that rigorous questioning from the Opposition should not be viewed as an attack, but rather as an important safeguard for democratic governance.
Assuring that such comments will not deter the Opposition from fulfilling its duty, Seruiratu stated, “We will continue to speak for farmers, workers, and affected communities who expect accountability, transparency, and honest leadership.” He reaffirmed his commitment to uphold his responsibilities as the Leader of the Opposition without fear or favor, consistently acting in the best interests of the people of Fiji.
In summary, Seruiratu’s stance highlights the critical need for accountability in governance and the essential role of the Opposition in fostering a transparent political climate. His remarks resonate as a reminder of the significant responsibility placed on leaders to advocate for the interests of their constituents, encouraging ongoing dialogue and constructive engagement.
