The Ministry of Education has taken an important step toward enhancing education accessibility for Year 9 students across the nation by approving the establishment of new schools. Minister Aseri Radrodro announced that Ratu Meli Memorial Secondary School has recently opened its doors to students, becoming part of a broader initiative aimed at minimizing travel hardships and ensuring that children remain engaged in their education.

In an encouraging development, Naweni Secondary School was launched last Thursday, with the next school, Namuka Secondary School, set to follow shortly. Looking ahead, plans are in motion to establish additional schools in regions such as Nawaka, Yasawa, Ra, and Naitasiri. Minister Radrodro emphasized the importance of these institutions, stating, “These schools aim to bring education to our doorstep, helping our children stay in school until they complete their education.”

He commended local communities for their perseverance in overcoming the long distances that previously hindered learning, attributing last year’s student successes to these efforts. With school enrollment reaching over 225,000 last year, the addition of these new schools is crucial in ensuring that all students have equitable access to education, particularly in light of Fiji’s unique geographical challenges.

As these schools are set to officially open tomorrow, there is a sense of hope that this initiative will foster a more inclusive educational environment and provide greater opportunities for students throughout the country.
