Fiji has officially inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem, marking a significant diplomatic milestone as it becomes the first Pacific Island nation and the seventh country globally to establish an embassy in this disputed city. The opening ceremony was attended by Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, highlighting the strengthening ties between the two nations.
The embassy’s opening signifies Fiji’s growing international engagement and aligns it with countries such as the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Kosovo, Papua New Guinea, and Paraguay, all of which have established embassies in Jerusalem. Argentina is also planning to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem next year.

Notably, Fiji abstained from a recent United Nations resolution favoring Palestinian statehood, underscoring its supportive stance toward Israel amidst the ongoing geopolitical tensions. In terms of policy, Rabuka clarified that establishing an embassy does not equate to endorsing all policies of the host nation but rather seeks constructive engagement.
