Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has initiated an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding a trip to New Zealand slated for January 2025, along with concerns regarding the financial management of the Fiji Sports Council (FSC). In a media statement released last night, the Prime Minister highlighted that he met with the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, to inform him of the inquiry’s commencement.
The investigation is set to scrutinize the details of Mr. Saukuru’s official trip to New Zealand, which is underwritten by FSC sponsorship, as well as the handling of funds by Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure, the council’s chief executive officer. This decision comes in the wake of media reports indicating that both Mr. Saukuru and his wife had traveled business class, utilizing a Fiji Airways arrangement that was intended exclusively for official council travel.
In response to the public outcry, Minister Saukuru has expressed his willingness to reimburse the costs incurred from this travel. The issue gained prominence earlier this year following allegations that FSC’s funds had reportedly been mismanaged, leading to significant financial losses and decisions concerning staff reorganizations and travel approvals being made without thorough scrutiny by the board.
Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that Mr. Saukuru has pledged not to obstruct the investigation. Furthermore, the Prime Minister has granted approval for the minister’s previously arranged six-day tour of the Yasawa Group, which is set to begin tomorrow. The government has committed to providing further updates regarding the investigation as they unfold.
This inquiry represents a step towards greater accountability and transparency within the Fiji Sports Council, aiming to restore public trust in the management of sports funding in the country. As the investigation progresses, stakeholders will be keenly watching for developments that may influence the governance of sports and public funds in Fiji.
