Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Pacific leaders and law enforcement officials in the Micronesian region, particularly in Kiribati, to take advantage of police recruit training programs available in Fiji.
Speaking at the recent CHOGM 2024 Pacific Policing Event in Samoa, Mr. Rabuka highlighted that this opportunity is not limited to Kiribati but is also extended to other small island nations interested in training in Fiji.
He recalled reaching out to Micronesian partners, especially Kiribati, encouraging them to return to the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and informing their Prime Minister about the possibility of sending training teams from the Fiji Police to assist in their policing efforts. Mr. Rabuka noted that some island police forces already send their recruits to train in Fiji.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the invitation remains open to Kiribati and any other islands seeking training opportunities in Fiji. He further mentioned that Fiji’s security forces have trained alongside special forces and military personnel in the United States, which has facilitated the training of recruits.
Mr. Rabuka described how a colleague in the U.S. has enabled the training of Fiji’s security forces, and he intends to keep this collaboration ongoing. He expressed willingness to extend training opportunities to VIP security officers or police protection officers who are interested.
Today, the Prime Minister will be in Noumea, New Caledonia, alongside three other Pacific leaders as part of the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum initiative to visit the nation that recently experienced civil unrest.
