The stigma surrounding the reporting of online crimes significantly hampers investigations, resulting in many offenders remaining unpunished. This concern has been voiced by Serupepeli Neiko, the Director of the Fiji Police Force Criminal Investigations Department (CID), who identifies it as a critical challenge in the fight against online crime.

Neiko points out that although victims may initially report incidents, they often become reluctant to provide formal statements when asked for further details. He explains, “When we get back to them, they say they need some time to think it over, and it can take at least a month or even three months. Some are simply not ready to give their statements.” This hesitation can severely impede the police’s ability to move forward with investigations since they rely on these official records to understand the full extent of the crime.

Filipe Batiwale, the Commissioner of the Online Safety Commission, shares similar sentiments, stressing that the stigma surrounding online crimes serves as a significant barrier. He notes that many victims experience feelings of shame that prevent them from presenting identification or discussing the emotional and psychological trauma they have endured. As a result, valuable information that could aid investigations is frequently withheld.

Both Neiko and Batiwale are calling on victims of online crime to be courageous and come forward, emphasizing the importance of their cooperation in the justice process. By providing formal statements, victims play a crucial role in ensuring that justice is served and that offenders are held accountable for their actions.

This urgent plea highlights the need for a supportive environment where victims feel safe and empowered to speak out. Addressing the stigma surrounding online crime reporting could not only lead to improved support for victims but also strengthen law enforcement efforts in a digital age where such offenses are increasingly prevalent.
