Fiji One Women Edge Wanderers Goannas in Suva Showdown

Margaret Elbourne and Charlotte Tabadromu shone in the spotlight as they propelled the Fiji One women’s hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Wanderers Goannas at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. Their goals proved pivotal in this match, which was part of the Australian Wanderers Tour featuring its under-13 and under-14 teams. The sole goal for the visitors was scored by Heidi Rodgers.

Coach Fatima Mario acknowledged the team’s efforts and highlighted the challenges they faced, particularly with injuries affecting several players. Despite the demanding conditions and fatigue exacerbated by Fiji’s heat, the girls exhibited resilience and determination. “Our girls are just trying to maneuver through the injuries and recover as quickly as possible,” Mario noted.

She expressed her gratitude for the unwavering support from parents and guardians, which has been instrumental in the athletes’ performance. “We’re grateful to our parents, they’ve provided their lunches, Powerade, and recovery replenishments to keep our girls on track,” she said.

Reflecting on the team’s journey, Mario pointed out the positive atmosphere that had developed within the squad over the short period of time they came together. “The culture has been building up in the last few days, and it’s good to see that. They are getting over their mistakes and motivating each other – the sisterhood is coming out,” she remarked.

Looking ahead, the Fiji One team is set to compete in their final match against the Goannas today at 1:30 PM, where they will aim to continue their upward trajectory in the tournament. This remarkable spirit and unity within the young squad is fostering a hopeful and promising future for women’s hockey in Fiji.
