The Fiji One girls’ hockey team showcased an improved performance in their second match at the Junior Hockey Tournament, securing a solid 1-1 draw against Australia’s seasoned Wanderers Emus at the National Hockey Centre yesterday. This came after a challenging start to the tournament, where the team suffered a 3-1 loss in their opening match against the same Australian side.
Head coach Augustine Shaw lauded the players for their determination and teamwork, emphasizing that the draw was a significant milestone considering the experience of their opponents. “It was a great performance from the girls; they showed immense passion and teamwork. Even though we didn’t secure the win, the 1-1 draw against an experienced Australian team is a fantastic achievement for us,” Shaw commented.
The coach also noted the invaluable lessons learned through competition with international teams like the Wanderers Emus, highlighting the importance of cultural exchange and networking opportunities that such tournaments provide. “We always love having the Aussies here; we learn from each other, not just about the sport but also about culture and networking. This tournament has been great so far,” he added.
With many players new to hockey, their dedication and focus during the match were particularly inspiring. Shaw expressed his gratitude to the players and their families for their unwavering support and encouraged budding athletes to join the team and pursue their passion for sports.
The tournament is set to conclude on Sunday, and the expectations are high for the Fiji One team as they continue to grow and develop through these competitive experiences.
