Fiji is facing significant challenges in keeping up with the fast-paced evolution of cyber threats, given its advancement in technology, as stated by Savenaca Siwatibau, the Cyber Security Manager at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration. Siwatibau emphasized the critical need for improving the integration of personnel, processes, and technology to effectively enhance the nation’s cyber defense mechanisms. He noted that while Fiji has made strides in developing technology, government agencies are still in a “catch-up phase” regarding law enforcement capabilities in cybersecurity.

Focusing on community resilience against cyber risks, Siwatibau’s remarks align with broader governmental efforts aimed at establishing a secure digital environment in Fiji. This includes the development of a comprehensive privacy and personal data protection policy, formulated to meet international standards such as the Council of Europe’s Convention 108. Mohammed Moishin, Director for Digital Government at the Transformation Office, highlighted this initiative’s objective to ensure that Fiji’s legislative and policy frameworks are not only compliant with global norms but are also tailored to the local context.

Fiji’s efforts to elevate its cybersecurity capabilities reflect a proactive stance taken by various stakeholders within the government and law enforcement. Recently, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has indicated that the government is finalizing Fiji’s National Cybersecurity Strategy for 2025–2030, focused on safeguarding critical infrastructure and data systems against escalating cyber threats. The establishment of Fiji’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) aims to address these challenges by improving incident response and fostering better collaboration among government agencies.

Fiji’s drive towards strengthening its cybersecurity landscape shows promise, demonstrating commitment not only to secure its own digital space but also to inspire regional collaboration and create a safer online ecosystem across the Pacific. These initiatives signify a hopeful trajectory for a resilient digital future, reinforcing the importance of coordinated efforts among national agencies, communities, and international partners in combating the rising tide of cybercrime.

In summary, the focused approach towards enhancing cybersecurity in Fiji showcases its dedication to becoming a regional leader in digital safety and resilience, paving the way for a more secure online environment for its citizens and neighboring countries.
