The Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, especially in the Western Division, to take urgent measures to protect themselves from climate-sensitive diseases as floodwaters in the area begin to recede. As conditions improve, concerns are growing regarding the potential for a rise in diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea, all of which tend to spike following flooding.
Ragigia Dawai, Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized the importance of taking proactive steps for health and safety. “While the immediate danger of flooding is subsiding, the risk of disease remains high,” she stated, urging families to implement practical precautions to safeguard their well-being.
In recent days, the Fiji Red Cross has assessed 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals in need, both at evacuation centers and within communities. Essential supplies, including Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets, have been distributed to those affected.
The organization is continuing to monitor the situation closely, paying particular attention to areas identified as hotspots for diseases in the Western Division. Community members are advised to be vigilant and follow preventative measures.
Health guidance has been issued, with the Red Cross encouraging individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual fatigue to seek medical attention without delay. Prompt treatment can be crucial in preventing serious health issues.
The organization also expressed gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous donation of clean drinking water, which is vital for affected families during this recovery phase. Dawai acknowledged the essential support from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners, underscoring the importance of collaboration in crisis situations.
“By taking these steps, we aim to mitigate the risk of disease outbreaks and support affected communities in their recovery,” Dawai concluded, highlighting the resilience of communities facing these challenges.
This call to action not only highlights the importance of health safety after natural disasters but also showcases the collective effort and support within the community during challenging times. It is a reminder of the strength found in solidarity and the meaningful changes that can emerge when organizations and individuals work together for a common cause.
