The Central Division Emergency Operations Center has been activated in response to heavy rainfall affecting parts of Fiji, with teams actively monitoring the situation in the Western Division. During a press conference, Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural, Maritime Development and Disaster Management, announced that the Fiji Police Force is on standby for potential evacuation of individuals from areas at high risk of flooding.
Residents have been advised to contact 917 if assistance with evacuation is needed. Significant flash flooding has been reported in areas such as Sigatoka Town and Lawaqa Road, coinciding with high tide conditions exacerbating the situation. Mr. Ditoka urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel during the heavy rains, emphasizing the importance of safety.
A notable precaution involved the evacuation of a family of ten from the Calia Settlement in Serua, who were temporarily relocated to an LDS Church but have since returned home safely. Mr. Ditoka stressed the risks associated with flooding and severe weather, imploring parents to keep children indoors and refrain from attempting to cross flooded areas.
Traffic disruptions and potential road closures are anticipated, with motorists advised to exercise caution. Flash flood alerts are in effect for low-lying and flood-prone locations across various regions, with heavy rain warnings particularly for the Northern Division and alerts for the Central and Eastern Divisions, as well as the Yasawa Group.
The current weather conditions are being attributed to a trough of low pressure moving over the Fiji group, bringing with it increased cloudiness and rain. There is an expectation for conditions to gradually improve from the west later in the day, clearing by Thursday.
This proactive response from the authorities and the community’s cooperation reflects a strong commitment to ensuring public safety during adverse weather conditions. The quick establishment of emergency operations and the effective communication from officials serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges.
Summary: Fiji’s Central Division Emergency Operations Center has been activated due to heavy rainfall and flooding, with evacuation measures in place. Authorities urge caution and community cooperation as they monitor the situation closely, with expectations of improving weather conditions in the coming days.
