The Ministry of Health & Medical Services is closely monitoring measles cases reported across Australia and New Zealand as of December 2024. To effectively track and manage potential outbreaks, the Ministry is utilizing its Early Warning Alert and Response Surveillance (EWARS) system alongside the Hospital Based Active Surveillance (HBAS) for Acute Fever and Rash (AFR).
Measles, known for its highly contagious nature, spreads rapidly through airborne droplets from coughing and sneezing. The Ministry has identified key symptoms associated with the virus, including fever, runny nose, cough, and red, sore eyes.
Despite maintaining high immunization coverage for measles, the Ministry warns that the public remains vulnerable, particularly to travel-related infections. Travelers heading to areas experiencing measles outbreaks are encouraged to be vigilant about the disease’s transmission and to take protective measures. This includes wearing face masks and using alcohol-based hand sanitizers while traveling.
For individuals returning from affected regions who exhibit symptoms of measles, the Ministry stresses the importance of seeking immediate medical attention at nearby healthcare facilities.
By staying proactive and informed, the community can better protect itself from potential outbreaks, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and immunization in public health.
