The Central Division Emergency Operations Center has been activated due to heavy rainfall affecting parts of Fiji. Minister for Rural, Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, announced in a press conference that the Fiji Police Force is on standby for potential evacuations from flood-prone areas. Fijians are urged to call 917 if they need assistance.
Flash floods have been reported in various locations, including Sigatoka Town and Lawaqa Road, coinciding with high tide and significant rainfall in the area. Mr. Ditoka emphasized that local teams are collaborating with the Sigatoka Town Council and the Fiji Police to manage movements in the town, urging residents to limit travel during this rainfall period.
As a precaution, a household of ten from the Calia Settlement in Serua was evacuated to a local LDS Church, but they have since returned home safely. The Minister highlighted the dangers associated with flooding and severe weather and encouraged the public, especially parents, to keep children indoors and avoid crossing flooded waters.
Traffic disruptions and possible road closures are expected, prompting motorists to exercise caution. A flash flood alert is currently active for low-lying areas and small streams across Vanua Levu, Lami, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, and Naitasiri, while heavy rain warnings remain in place for several regions. A trough of low pressure over Fiji is contributing to the adverse weather, although conditions are projected to improve by Thursday.
As residents brace for possible further impacts, the coordinated efforts of emergency services and community adherence to safety recommendations may mitigate risks and safeguard lives during this challenging weather.
In summary, the community is encouraged to stay informed and cautious as officials continue to monitor the situation closely and respond appropriately to the ongoing weather events.
