Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to seek higher ground as ongoing heavy rainfall in the Western Division raises the risk of flooding. The Fiji Meteorological Service reported that water levels have risen significantly in locations including Ba, the Nasivi River in Tavua, Nakauvadra, Rakiraki, and several areas around Vanua Levu.
An active trough of low pressure currently impacting the Fiji Group is generating strong winds, with northwesterly gusts reaching between 20 to 30 knots, and occasionally peaking at 35 knots. These conditions are expected to lead to rough seas and increased chances of poor visibility in regions experiencing heavy rain and thunderstorms.
This situation highlights the importance of preparedness and community awareness in mitigating the impact of severe weather conditions. While the forecast may seem daunting, local authorities and meteorological services are working diligently to keep the public informed and safe.
It’s crucial for residents to stay vigilant, adhere to safety advisories, and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families during this challenging weather event. With community cooperation and proactive measures, the impact of such natural phenomena can be managed effectively.
