A flood alert is currently in effect for areas in Fiji that are prone to flooding, especially those located adjacent to and downstream of the country’s major rivers. The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported that rainfall measurements over the past 24 hours, from 5 AM on Saturday to 5 AM on Sunday, have varied between 30mm and 47mm in the Northern Division.
According to the Fiji Met, water levels in all major rivers are still below the designated flood alert thresholds. However, there is a flash flood warning issued for low-lying areas susceptible to flash flooding and small streams within the Northern Division.
An active trough of low pressure accompanied by clouds and rain is slowly moving across the northeastern regions of Fiji. As a result, heavy rainfall is expected to continue affecting the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, the Northern Division, the Northern Lau Group, and the western half and interior areas of Viti Levu later today.
The situation underlines the importance of community preparedness and vigilance in flood-prone areas. Authorities are urged to maintain communication and readiness to respond if conditions worsen.
While the current water levels are manageable, residents should stay informed and heed any updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service to ensure their safety.
In summary, while flood levels remain below danger in Fiji for now, continuous monitoring and community preparedness are essential as heavy rains are forecasted to increase. It is a reminder of the resilience and proactivity that can be cultivated in communities vulnerable to natural weather events.
